The rainy season has well and truly set in. We’ve been having so many wet days, that sometimes a whole week will pass without sunshine. It feels so weird because all I remember last year was sunshine for most days, then rain for an hour or two.

The Mister reminded me that we were actually in Malaysia this time last year, and it suddenly makes more sense!

I can’t believe we’ve been living in Thailand for well over a year now, but I guess it feels a lot shorter as we did have that five month extended stay in Australia ~ smack dab in the middle of it all.

Despite the rain that’s constantly rolling in, I was lucky enough to get a blog shoot squeezed in last weekend.

It was a bit of a gamble as to whether it would come together at all. It was late afternoon by the time I could head out. The sky was becoming quite cloudy, there was hardly any light left ~ and I didn’t even know where to go! It’s always a nerve-wracking race if you are spontaneously doing a shoot at the end of the day, you’re scrambling to get everything sorted out before the sun sinks, frantically racing those last golden beams as they disappear over the horizon.

I searched google maps for the nearest public park ~ and I found one that was only 3.5km away, but the problem with traffic in Thailand is that it is a little like Sydney. If you hit the roads at the wrong time, the dense traffic and abominably slow lights {It takes 10 minute to get a green light, sometimes even longer if you miss the change due to the backup of traffic. We avoid traffic lights wherever we can, though some are most definitely worse than others!} can mean that it can take up to 30 minutes to get that 3.5 km!

Then I was risking that the park would have any good locations to set up, or not be crowded with people, or actually have a nice backdrop. You know, all those important things ~ haha!

Thankfully, there turned out to be some lovely scenery, and this very pretty house with awesome architecture, although I wouldn’t be going back for the park itself. That turned out to be the corner of a block that was terribly overgrown with grass, and there was a giant shine in the middle, taking up most of the space.

I’m very cautious about photographing shrines, as I want to make sure that I respect Thai culture and not appear like an insensitive foreigner! Which, being a foreigner and blogger can really be the worst combination. Even though it was a super quiet neighbourhood there were a lot of people running past exercising, or walking dogs, and my little venture with the camera out at dusk meant I was the ninth wonder of the Thai locals! Awk-ward!!

And after all that fuss, I wasn’t even sure I’d have enough photos to do this post, as I broke the number one photography rule and went out with a semi-almost-dead camera battery… Which meant that my battery died before I could finish the shoot… naturally.

…Whoops!

I keep saying that I need to buy a spare, and maybe now that I’ve had the worst happen I’ll finally do it? Haha, or it will end up like my camera lens and take me fifty-million years get that done…

Busy as we are at the moment, I have found the time to do a little thrifting ~ second hand and vintage shopping is not really the same in Thailand as it is in other places, but I’ve found some cute pieces here and there. I picked up this lovely chestnut leather purse last year at a street market, I think it might be from the 60’s or 70’s.

My hat I found at a second-hand stall in the shopping centre carpark (!!) where we do our grocery shopping. {Stalls in Thailand are weird, they exist just about anywhere you could think or want to set one up. We even bought a brand new, custom built couch in the carpark!!}

I really loved the idea of pairing them with this repro dress from Sisjuly, as this late 1930’s or early 1940’s inspired frock really felt like it needed touches of 30’s fashion with it. I know that technically the skirt is too short for a true 30’s look, but those sleeves! They are definitely 30s worthy with that glamorous flouncing, and I just love them.

I’m also fond of the sage green fabric. Although it often feels like there is way to much green in my photos of Thailand already, somehow I still find myself wearing shades of green far more often than I ever do in Australia. I guess my love of matchy-matchy even extends to which biome I’m living in!

So do you think my look passes for a 1930’s inspired ensemble or should I stick to the 1940’s and 1950’s? I’ve been eyeing off a lot of 30s fashions a lot lately, and I’ve even bought a stack of 1930’s vintage patterns as well as some of the Simplicity re-releases. As much as I love it, I really couldn’t afford to buy true 30’s vintage, {not that it would ever fit me}, and I’d be terrified of ruining it.

Plus, I’m not sure I could ever get my hair to behave for finger waves. I’m hard pressed to get a decent pin curl set out of it, so in these pictures I just rolled it under for a faux bob. I feel like if I worked a bit more on it, my faux bob could look okay, so I’m seriously thinking of dabbling a bit more in 1930’s styles, hence buying the sewing patterns.

It’s an era of fashion that is calling to me, but I’m a bit unsure if I can actually pull off 1930s properly… There’s no harm in trying I suppose? Or is my style just not accurate enough to make it work? Would you have any tips for a first-timer? …Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough.

Oh my goodness ~ I knew it has been a long time since I last did a Stitching Stories, but over a year and a half? Wow…

I guess it does make sense, we were so busy packing at the beginning of 2017 that I didn’t have a lick of time spare for any hobbies at all. When we got back for Christmas at the end of November, it wasn’t long until I was sitting down and doing some sewing at my Mom’s machine. I finished two dresses over Christmas ~ this one, and another. But I haven’t had a chance to post about until now.

The dress I’m wearing in this post was supposed to be my Christmas dress {didn’t finish it in time} and a wearable toile test for Butterick Retro Pattern B5748. I’ve had trouble with Butterick patterns fitting me properly before, so even though this was a simple pattern, I was determined to try and make sure it fitted perfectly beforehand.

I added a FBA, added extra seam allowance as the finished measurements of the size 14 I cut were 36B and 28W. Now, I hadn’t measured myself recently {and this is actually a good thing..!} but I knew for certain I was NOT a 28W!

I did the math and added the extra inches I thought I’d need and sewed up the bodice. It seemed to fit okay, but the skirt wasn’t on yet, so I couldn’t really tell. Once I put the skirt on it was clear to me that the bodice was wayyyyy too big! So glad I didn’t try to add even extra for my new measurements!

To make it wearable, I ended up making a series of darts and inside tucks to pinch out ALL the excess fabric I’d put in. Unfortunately, I’d already hand sewn my bias binding trim on around the neckline and armscyes. This meant that they all ended up with visible seams in the binding. Poo.

I had to take a big chunk out of the middle of the bodice, the back and the shoulders. And in the end, I also took more in at the waist seam to get the waist seam up a little higher! This was tricky as I did it after inserting my zipper.

Overall, the dress doesn’t fit as well as I’d like, it has some bunching issues under the arms, and it also likes to drop down at the front, which pushes the shoulder seams forward and the extra fabric bunches under my bust. I think this is actually the fault of too much fabric at the back. I have a slight sway back, and if there was any adjustment that I really needed it was a SBA.

Still, the dress is super lightweight and comfortable. The length and the simplicity of the cut and fabric make it really easy to wear so I was actually wearing it a TON over the summer.

But one thing was still bothering me… I’d added the bow at the neckline when making the dress ~ mostly because I’d had to do that interior tuck right up the middle of the bodice and I needed to camouflage the subsequent seam in the bias binding ~ but it wasn’t enough.

The rest of the dress looked so bare, I knew I had to do something about it. So just a week or so ago, I decided to add decorations to the pockets! I ended up with a loop-the-loop design with a bow at each end, and I really love, love, love it!

It doesn’t make the dress too fussy, but just adds that touch of something special. I was so pleased when I finally figured out what I needed to finish it off.

I have discovered I really do need to sew more basic clothing. I’m always drawn to all the fiddly patterns and all the fussy prints ~ and while I adore the intricacy of creating a detailed dress, I tend up “saving” those ones for special outings. I kept on pulling this one out over and over and over again because I loved how easy it was to wear! Whereas the second dress {which this one was the toile for…} yes, it has been sitting in the cupboard waiting for a special occasion to wear it! D’oh…

That one might not come out until much later on… Hehe…

~ Project Details ~

  • Year: Retro re-print from the 60s
  • Pattern: Butterick Retro B5748
  • Fabric: From my mother’s stash – a super sheer lightweight poly-cotton, red and white striped.
  • Notions: Red bias binding, red satin tubing, and a zip.
  • Time to complete: I can’t remember. The sewing on the machine didn’t take long at all, it was the hand sewing that really added the time. I hand sewed the bias trim, the hem, and the pocket detail.
  • Make again? Yes! I already have! And I want to make some other versions playing with the bodice style. I really enjoy how easy this one is to sew, and once I figured out the fit issues, I loved the fit.
  • Wear again? Absolutely. This one is coming with me to Thailand. I love it.
  • Total Cost:  Not sure. Maybe $15.00? Thanks Mummy for the fabric!

I know it’s taking me half a century to post these days, but hey! That’s life sometimes!

I’ve been “gifted” with all the colds and flues I missed out on this winter, {thanks Canberra crud…} so between that and trying to spend all the time with friends and family that I can, I have just been away from it all, even Instagram!! *le gasp!* (ô □ ô)

We took these pictures back in November when the Mister and I spent some time in Sydney. He was there for work and I was there for fun… Hehe! His work paid for a gorgeous hotel room right in the city, and we really enjoyed the time away. I loved the night time outlook over the city lights!

It’s kind of funny because I never really thought of myself as much of a city person, but over the last few years I’ve really come to appreciate all the things you get to enjoy in a busy, bustling city. There is certainly something unique to being in the middle of all that hustle, something that is vibrant and fun.

Sure, when it comes to day to day life, I am all for a great suburb with access to a lot of nature {and horses and bush and reserves and parks} and all that good stuff, but I really, really do enjoy a holiday in a big city. It’s a very refreshing change of pace.

And the buildings! Oh, the architecture… *swoon* Finding interesting buildings and places to see, it’s one of my favourite things to do. When I spot an interesting architectural design, or a beautiful piece of wall art, or décor ~ I get a thrill prickling down my spine just like I’ve uncovered a vintage treasure in a thrift shop.

It’s totally as awesome as putting together a fully realized outfit ~ just like this one!

I really adore how the lavender and tan paired together in this ensemble. The whole look is created with the perfect pieces for my style, and I am so into every. single. thing. in this outfit. The soft colour palette is my absolute favourite, it creates such a nice summery look ~ especially when combined with the bold violet purple and cardamom yellow of the pansies in my hair.

I’ve kind of made it my one of my goals to add more shades of purple to my wardrobe. I love violet, lavender and lilac, and I really wish I had more purple to wear! I’ll be keeping an eye out as much as I can, but I think I’ve made a good start with the addition of this Pinup Girl sundress.

Only, whyyyyy doesn’t it have pockets??

Seriously!

I’m am never more disappointed in a dress than when it doesn’t have pockets. Yeah, it bites if it doesn’t fit right, and it’s annoying if it creeps down while you wear it, or refuses to fasten properly, but the saddest thing is a complete lack of pockets if you ask me.

Especially when that’s the simplest problem to fix.

I mean, I purchased this dress second hand, but I know the price range that it was originally in, and boy oh boy, I would have been bummed if I had paid full price only to find that it had no pockets! I think that my Review cocktail dress that I posted about a long time ago has set a high standard, haha!

Is it just me though? Are pockets something you look for in your dresses and skirts? What is the one thing you need to have in your clothing to make it super wearable?

Basically I rate anything in my wardrobe with decent pockets as the best thing ever. If the clothing doesn’t have good, deep pockets, or any pockets at all, I am far less likely to pull it out and wear it. Pockets win all the time. That is all.

I think I’ve finally done it. I’ve finally found the perfect sunny weather style. This look really is my dream summertime ensemble!

The miniature roses, the sweet strawberry dangles on my straw purse, combined with chic wooden clogs ~ all these details add the finishing touches to my ideal red gingham dress. For me, it doesn’t get much more summer than this!

I’ve had the vague ideas of this look floating in my head for a while now, so it really felt great to finally put it all together. We wandered the streets of our Moo Baan after a long afternoon of shopping to find a picture perfect spot, and thankfully we had the road to ourselves.

We only just managed to sneak these photos in not long before we left Thailand, so they are a few weeks old already! It’s been a rather crazy year, and I really can’t believe it’s almost over… Eeek!

We have made it safely back, and now that we are finally over the jetlag; I can safely say that I’m definitely more acclimated to a tropical environment than I ever thought I would be…

You guys, Canberra is COLD! And grey. And cloudy. And it really makes me miss the gorgeous sunshine we had over in Thailand, like when we took these pictures!

However, one thing that I’ve bought back with me, and that I’m still enjoying very much ~ funnily enough ~ is my natural curly hair!

Quite a while ago I posted a picture on Instagram where my hair had gone pretty curly ~ almost to the point of an afro(!), or a Vogue editorial ~ and honestly, the response I got was quite astounding to me! I had people commenting on it left, right and centre ~ just about on every social media platform and I was shocked.

Everyone seemed to just love my natural curls! Even as wild and crazy and bouffy as they were that day. I mean, they were soooo fluffy! I would have firmly pegged it as a “bad hair day”! Yet, no one else seemed see it the same way.

So I got to thinking, maybe I should just roll with it and let my curls do their own thing? I wasn’t sure though, so polled it on Insta, and everyone was super positive about letting my curls run wild and free. {Yes, hair can totally run wild and free ~ the mane is unstoppable and untameable! It just wants to have fun and do it’s own thing… Haha!} And again, there where random supportive, and super positive comments all around the place from people I would NEVER have expected to chip in!

I was kind of overwhelmed, but ready to go for it. Since then, that’s what I’ve been aiming for ~ the curliest of curls I can possibly get!

It’s a bit strange, as I have been trying to tame, smooth, and flatten the mane for such a long time! I’ve worked hard on achieving a good pin curl set on my hair type over the last six years. To let it just do it’s thing feels very weird. But it seems like it was the right time for something new.

I feel like all these little changes I’ve been making since moving away at the beginning of this year has really transformed my style. And while I will always have a soft spot for a neatly defined pin curl set, I do have to admit ~ this natural mop is by far soooo much easier to achieve!

I’m not sure I’m even ready to go back to pin curls yet, but maybe in time I will revisit them. If I haven’t forgotten everything I have learned by then! Haha!

Please don’t laugh at me, but I have kind of been obsessed with ballerinas and the idea of dancing ballet ever since I was a wee lass. It is the first thing I ever remember really, really, really  wanting to do.

I never did get the chance to dance ~ my mother thought my thighs would get fat when I stopped dancing {er, not true I don’t think? Also, why would you stop?} and that my feet would be ruined {true, true, completely true!}. So I was put into gymnastics instead, and for a long while wanted to be a competitive gymnast.

I stopped gymnastics when we moved from Armidale to Canberra, and took up horse riding. {Forever happy I did that! }

However, I have never truly stopped wanting to dance in the bottom of my heart. I sporadically dream I can dance en pointe, effortlessly gliding across light-filled, echoing ball rooms with flying jeté and ceaseless pirouettes.

Then I wake up, and for a moment, I live in the dream ~ only to feel fettered when I remember that my body doesn’t know how to move like that….

Buuuuttttt…  Sometimes that secret desire breaks through and I end up dancing around anyway.

I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed this {I sure have while editing my blog pictures!}, but pretty much every time I’m doing a photoshoot in flats, the majority of the photo I’m up in demi-pointe, as high up on my tippy toes as I can be. I rarely take the pictures standing normally! Whoops… (=⌒_⌒=)'

This is particularly a problem if I’m wearing a floaty dress as well as flat shoes.

….Even more so if it’s a windy day when I’m wearing said floaty dress…

Which it most definitely was in these pictures!

That combination meant I spent eighty percent of this photoshoot on my toes. And I didn’t even notice!! I think it was pretty appropriate that I was wearing a “Swan Lake” inspired ensemble and even had a swan painted wooden box bag to match!

Anyway, if you recognize this outfit ~ yes, it is the one I was wearing on the day of this year’s AAVGM.

I had parked my car at Sydney University for the day, and when I was walking to the Rock’n’Roll Markets in the morning, I was walking past all these gorgeous buildings! I found the all the old English influence enchanting, and was longing to take some pictures, but I had to keep going.

However, when I was walking back to the car after saying goodbye to everyone, I thought ~ well, why not take some pictures before I hop in the car and drive home? It’s pretty much my only chance to do so ~ and that settled it.

I grabbed the camera and parked myself in front of the Old Lecturer’s Hall to take my pictures before the rain started blowing in. And when I was done, that was finally the end of my epic solo trip to Sydney.

Yes, I drove up by myself and to be honest, it’s been ages since I’ve done a solo long distance trip in the car {though, does my trip to Bowral count? …Nah ~ I think that was a mini warm up…}, and it was certainly was the first time I’ve done any real driving in Sydney. Does having a GPS count as cheating though?!

I couldn’t have done the trip without it; I’m a hopeless navigator and I tend to get a bit stressed when I’m driving in thick traffic in an unknown city! It’s as bad as trying to find a car park in a busy location when you are running late… Ugh.

But I didn’t have to deal with running late at all this trip which was also a high point for me ~ maybe my dreams of one day being perfectly organized and on time are actually possible!  And maybe, just maybe, one day I’ll learn to dance for real. (•ᵕ ᴗ ᵕ•)❀

Oh, this day was such a perfect day!

The sun, the sand, the surf ~ there’s nothing better for an Australian summer holiday, especially on these golden beaches. Naturally, while I was up at the Gold Coast with Harlow Darling and my sister, we went to Surfer’s Paradise Beach to spend some time hanging out in the sunshine.

It’s a popular spot, so there were lots of people around, and I’m sure at least some would have been wondering who was the crazy chick dancing around in the surf taking photos, but eh… Life of a blogger right??!

After the lazy, sun kissed morning at the beach, we decided that some food was certainly in order, so we walked down to the QT Hotel which is just a block or two away. Boy, oh boy ~ the food was delicious! We had Mexican, and the yummiest tropical cocktails in the cutest tiki tumblers!

Unfortunately, the end of lunch also signalled the end of my little holiday ~ we had to say a fond farewell to Harlow and zip back to my sisters home… Oh, boy! You should have seen me run! Haha! ヾ(≧∇≦)ゞ

I’d tried to pack in the morning, but really there wasn’t much time, or much that I could actually put away. So when we got home I flew into a whirl wind of packing and craziness, and changing into warmer clothing for the flight home. We made it with fifteen minutes to shape ~ {yay! We were worried for a bit there!} and obviously I got home safely. Very tired, but very happy to have such a lovely time with my friends. It’s always a good thing to make memories with people you care about. ❀❤❀

This Lady K Loves seersucker two piece set was really the perfect beach outfit though! I’d ordered the matching blouse and skirt at the tail end of this summer season, and when it came I knew that I wanted to snap it at a beach. I hadn’t had that chance and it was suddenly the end of autumn! I resigned myself to waiting until next summer to wear it, when lo and behold… Yep! The Gold Coast trip happened, so into the extremely over-stuffed suitcase it went.

What I really loved about wearing it to the beach was the chance to style this set with a super casual look. Sometimes I feel like there’s a standard of ‘dressed up’ that my vintage outfits have to reach in order to be on the authentic side {which I do like to try for most of the time}, so it’s fun to pull together a ‘casual’ look once in a while. Annnd then you realise that your casual look can still be pretty darn dressed up; comparatively! Hat ~ good sun protection, matching sunglasses ~ fairly standard I suppose, and… a brooch? To the beach??  Haha!!

Well, anyway, I felt super relaxed and casual, and that’s all the really counts in the end I think! And yes, seersucker is the perfect summer fabric. I need more in my wardrobe, I really do. Cotton is awesome, don’t get me wrong, but for a lightweight, breathable fabric that is fairly nearly crush proof ~ you really can’t beat seersucker. I had to iron everything else from my suitcase, but not this!! (•̀o•́)ง✧

I do just want to ask though ~ for the sake of a good holiday photo, how crazy have you gone? Snaps in crowded locations? Sitting on the edge of a cliff or lookout?  Sneaky pics in the *gasp* art gallery?

{Actually ~ side note, last time I was in France you were allowed to take photos in the museums and galleries {yes, even in the Louvre!} and it was actually really cool! Except that you couldn’t really see the Mona Lisa at all due to the amount of flashes in the protective glass casing… Haha! I laughed and moved on as there were many other amazing paintings and artworks to see besides that one.}
