༺ The Adventure Begins ༻

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset

We made it.

It’s been a bit of a wild ride to get here, and it certainly has taken us a few weeks to settle in, but I am very happy to say that we have finally begun our epic new adventure as a nomadic family in Thailand!

Of course, I hardly know where to begin ~ there has been so much happening and so many stories to tell…

I’ll try to keep it concise as I’m sure this post will get too long as it is!

{P.S. ~ I am sorry if you follow me on Instagram and have seen a lot of these photos already. I tend to take most, if not all, of my pictures on my phone and then share them so others can see too! But because they are the only photos I’m taking really at the moment, a lot of them are really raw, and the ones that aren’t where already shared. But I am using them here too.  :P }

Departures

- This was taken before we descended in luggage madness… There was no smiling trying to haul our ten bags and three little children forever away to the opposite side of the airport let me tell you!

Looking-at-planesWaiting

- We tried a “Carry On Only” luggage experiment, but the determined very quickly {in about ten minutes flat!} that that would really only work for adults/kids that are big and old enough to take responsibility for their own bags. We shall be rejigging our luggage set up before we move again, that’s for sure!! And we will probably be going with two large suitcases to check in, and the rest is sort of up in air until we start repacking. We swapped the children’s backpacks out for Trunkis [small wheeled suitcases that the children can pull themselves or sit on and be pulled by an adult } at the airport { !! I finished repacking right as we got called to board!! (○ _ ○) } and found they worked much better. So we will keep the Trunkis, as they were very handy for carting around tired children through giant airports in the wee hours of the morning!

Landing-in-Krabi

-  Landing in Krabi, and wowwww…… The humidity sweeps over you like a stifling, wet hot blanket of sauna steam…. You instantly sweat out of every pore in your body, and in one minute, your clothing is sopping.

It’s one of those things you have to experience to really understand how it is ~ I mean, I had read about it, heard about it, and knew it was a thing, but I really didn’t get it until I stepped out of that air conditioned airport!

- By the roadside on Koh Lanta Island; these little Gas “Stations” are everywhere! Often in front of shops, restaurants and even in front of family homes! The locals use these to help boost their incomes.

Jungle views from the back of a taxiFirst adventures in a taxiFresh-Restaurant-ROT---Best-mango-shake-on-Lanta

- In a ‘taxi’ for our first adventure on Koh Lanta Island, Isabelle and Mama. A taxi in Koh Lanta is most often a ute {or pick up truck for my American friends} with seats along both sides of the tray and a short pipe frame covered with plastic for the roof, and clear plastic “windows” that can be pulled down if it is raining. It’s nicer to have the open sides for most of the time as there is no AC in the back and you need the cooler air to keep you from melting. And I must say, this is where being a tall Westerner, or “Farang” is a bit of a pain as there isn’t quite enough room to sit up straight and I get a bit of a backache at times! Or bump my head on the roof…

- Street views in Royal Old Town, on the East side of Koh Lanta. This was once a major shipping port of Thailand, established by the Chinese over a hundred years ago. There is a lot of different cultural influences on Koh Lanta thanks to all the trading!

- Different styles of Thai architecture: a beach-side Sala or small sitting hut, a woven palm leaf and bamboo huts, that are sometimes multiple stories, a simple hut that acts like a private sitting area for eating at one of our favourite restaurants.

- The food is fresh and delicious, with lovely flavours – but be warned – they sure can pack a punch! That last dish on the end looks all innocent but I call it my “That time I accidentally ate a whole chilli and almost died” experience!

- Still playing around with vintage style, just working on the best ways to adapt it to extreme heat and humidity… In love with the light here, and the Birds of Paradise flowers, and even better, the awesome Thai patio furniture!

~ 11 Questions All About Blogging ~

I found this fun little post on A Coin for the Well and thought it was too interesting to pass up. So here are my confessions as a blogger!

1. When did you first start blogging and why?

I started blogging on the 9th of March, 2005 with a little old blog called ‘Insanity’ that was more of an online diary, and hardly a scintillating read. I had to start it for a class assignment at university, so it was quite boring to begin with, until I realized that no one was reading it, then I continued writing it for fun.

2. Have you had any past online presence?

Not much ~ I did toy with a Live Journal, and I think I played with a MySpace for all of, oh, a week?  I really wasn’t into the early stages of social networking. ‘Insanity’ was next, and then I fell into the world of real blogging {*le gasp!* There are other people out there that do this! There’s pictures! And fun stuff!` Me likey!!} with my first ‘proper’ blog ~ Depict This!.

3. When did you become serious about your blog?

Pretty much around the time when I started Depict This!. It did take a while to find my voice, even longer to find my style, and even longer than that {four years!!} to evolve to the blog you are reading now, Lavender & Twill.

4. What was your first blog post?

I think it was something like “OH HAI!1!!! IZ A WEB_LOG n00b AND I CAN HAZ AN ONLINE DAIRY!!11!!” My first post to Depict This! is here, *cringe* and my first post on Lavender & Twill is here.

5. What have been your biggest challenges blogging?

Learning how to network. I’m still not very good at it; I’m on all these different platforms, but each one seems to be segregated ~ I feel like my online presence is very splintered. I am hoping that a website listing all of these things and bringing them together under one branding will help with that. It’s a bit of a pain, and a rather large undertaking, so it’s taking time to get that going.

6. What is the most rewarding thing about blogging?

Being able to share my voice, my story and finding other people out there who share the same passions and ideas. It’s so lovely to be able to connect! ♡

Connect, share, friend, like | Lavender & Twill

7. What is the most discouraging thing about blogging?

How much time it takes to get really organized. Crazy amounts of social media + no organization = time gobbling black hole!

8. What is your lasting inspiration or motivation?

I’m not sure about this ~ maybe to share, share, share? I just have so much fun reaching out and connecting. That really motivates me.

9. What is your blogging dirty secret?

I find it really hard not to compare myself with other bloggers. She looks so perfect, like a doll. I wish I looked like her… Ugh, I love those Irregular Choice shoes, but I could never afford them! So want… Gah! Those pictures! Outfit! Perfect! *Groan* I’ll never be able to do that… Gee, I wish Betty Page would send ME free dresses… Why can’t I set up a blog and have a thousand page hits in a week?… And so on and so forth. I try to delete this internal dialogue, but sometimes it rings in my ears far too loud and clear.

10. What is your current goal as a blogger?

To enjoy what I do, so that others can enjoy it too. I love writing, taking photographs and telling stories. I would like to see Lavender & Twill as one of those happy places on the web that cheer you up, no matter what kind of day you are having.

11. Have you learned or become passionate about anything through blogging that caught you by surprise?

Sewing. I only started sewing because of the vintage bloggers that I followed that would sew their own amazing vintage outfits. Being tight in the pocket, but free with creativity, and it didn’t take me much time to pick up my scissors and git ah snippin’!

So that’s my little random post of the week, I hope you have enjoyed it! If you wish to fill out this questionnaire and post it yourself, please feel free to. Also, do leave a link; I’d love to read what you have to say about your own blogging journey!

~ Inspiring a Vintage Journey ~

I-heart-vintage
The lovely and inspiring Joanna from Dividing Vintage Moments is holding an amazing giveaway and is asking us all what inspires our vintage journey. So I am going to write a list of ten things that have helped me on my way to fabulous vintage frocks and fun.

 TIck_4

1 | Cute Dresses

Yeah, this will be on everyone’s list I am sure, but honestly, isn’t it the universal reason for wanting to wear vintage is so that we can prance around in pretty dresses and feel so wonderfully feminine?

2 | Blogging

I remember the first blog I started following - The Clothes Horse. That was the beginning of the end, as they say. I studied Journalism, and in 2007 was introduced to blogging. I kept a blog since then, but it was more of a personal dairy. When I saw The Clothes Horse blog in 2010 I suddenly found a whole world of blogging I had no idea existed and from there it was step, by step, blog by blog, and I found myself in the world of vintage blogging via Dairy of a Vintage Girl.

books

3 | Books

Before the dresses, before the heels, before the blogging, there was… books. Lots and lots of books. Books were the first thing I collected, the first thing were I was all like “old school is way better than anything modern”, the first thing I thrifted, and the first thing that I nicked off my mum when I decided that I wanted all her old stuff.

4 | Antique Furniture

I love old furniture and it’s lured me in to the world of things that are finely crafted by artisans who cared about their work, creating pieces that would last longer than a lifetime.

VintagePatternHollywood991

5 | Sewing

Making my own clothes is like opening a whole new world of exciting possibilities; styles and cut ~ and ruffles, and bows and puff sleeves, oh my! Of course, it has to be a vintage, or vintage inspired pattern, modern patterns simply don’t cut it for me. ;D

6 | Old Stories

History means so much to me – stories and the tales of people’s lives. I really like studying the past, and of course, the writer in me is fascinated with the details.

treasure

7 | Treasure Hunting

Ok, so its not really treasure, but we all know the thrill of finding the perfect piece of vintage hiding under the pile of 70’s polyester, or buried under all the dust. There’s nothing like the adrenalin rush of that perfect find.

8 | Teacups and Teapots

Old vintage china is one of my favorite collectables, and I love sipping a steaming hot brew from a delicate teacup, accompanied by a good old fashioned morning tea of hot scones and cream.

Doris Crinoline

9 | Crinolines & Circle Skirts

Puffy petticoats and a twirl-y circle skirt? One word - love!

10 | Color Palettes

I love the muted tones, jewel shades and pastel color palettes of the older eras. Of course, color palettes recycle, just like styles come around, but in my mind, you just can’t beat the original inspiration.

And that is a part of my vintage journey, I hope you enjoyed my little list. What are your vintage inspirations? I’d love to know. (✿◠‿◠)
