༺ Dustin’ off the Ol’ YouTube ༻

Ack! Finally I have filmed something new for the YouTube channel…

There hasn’t been anything new for … Um, years? But I’ve been filming more for the Teacup Girl YouTube channel ~ which you should totally check out if you want to know more about brooches, or brooch making and all the creative art-y stuff I get up to over there.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is that I’ve been having a lot of fun making those videos and it’s inspired me to comeback to YouTube for Lavender & Twill.

So our comeback is a thrift haul ~ and you’ll just have to watch to see the treasures I found!

The rainy season has well and truly set in. We’ve been having so many wet days, that sometimes a whole week will pass without sunshine. It feels so weird because all I remember last year was sunshine for most days, then rain for an hour or two.

The Mister reminded me that we were actually in Malaysia this time last year, and it suddenly makes more sense!

I can’t believe we’ve been living in Thailand for well over a year now, but I guess it feels a lot shorter as we did have that five month extended stay in Australia ~ smack dab in the middle of it all.

Despite the rain that’s constantly rolling in, I was lucky enough to get a blog shoot squeezed in last weekend.

It was a bit of a gamble as to whether it would come together at all. It was late afternoon by the time I could head out. The sky was becoming quite cloudy, there was hardly any light left ~ and I didn’t even know where to go! It’s always a nerve-wracking race if you are spontaneously doing a shoot at the end of the day, you’re scrambling to get everything sorted out before the sun sinks, frantically racing those last golden beams as they disappear over the horizon.

I searched google maps for the nearest public park ~ and I found one that was only 3.5km away, but the problem with traffic in Thailand is that it is a little like Sydney. If you hit the roads at the wrong time, the dense traffic and abominably slow lights {It takes 10 minute to get a green light, sometimes even longer if you miss the change due to the backup of traffic. We avoid traffic lights wherever we can, though some are most definitely worse than others!} can mean that it can take up to 30 minutes to get that 3.5 km!

Then I was risking that the park would have any good locations to set up, or not be crowded with people, or actually have a nice backdrop. You know, all those important things ~ haha!

Thankfully, there turned out to be some lovely scenery, and this very pretty house with awesome architecture, although I wouldn’t be going back for the park itself. That turned out to be the corner of a block that was terribly overgrown with grass, and there was a giant shine in the middle, taking up most of the space.

I’m very cautious about photographing shrines, as I want to make sure that I respect Thai culture and not appear like an insensitive foreigner! Which, being a foreigner and blogger can really be the worst combination. Even though it was a super quiet neighbourhood there were a lot of people running past exercising, or walking dogs, and my little venture with the camera out at dusk meant I was the ninth wonder of the Thai locals! Awk-ward!!

And after all that fuss, I wasn’t even sure I’d have enough photos to do this post, as I broke the number one photography rule and went out with a semi-almost-dead camera battery… Which meant that my battery died before I could finish the shoot… naturally.

…Whoops!

I keep saying that I need to buy a spare, and maybe now that I’ve had the worst happen I’ll finally do it? Haha, or it will end up like my camera lens and take me fifty-million years get that done…

Busy as we are at the moment, I have found the time to do a little thrifting ~ second hand and vintage shopping is not really the same in Thailand as it is in other places, but I’ve found some cute pieces here and there. I picked up this lovely chestnut leather purse last year at a street market, I think it might be from the 60’s or 70’s.

My hat I found at a second-hand stall in the shopping centre carpark (!!) where we do our grocery shopping. {Stalls in Thailand are weird, they exist just about anywhere you could think or want to set one up. We even bought a brand new, custom built couch in the carpark!!}

I really loved the idea of pairing them with this repro dress from Sisjuly, as this late 1930’s or early 1940’s inspired frock really felt like it needed touches of 30’s fashion with it. I know that technically the skirt is too short for a true 30’s look, but those sleeves! They are definitely 30s worthy with that glamorous flouncing, and I just love them.

I’m also fond of the sage green fabric. Although it often feels like there is way to much green in my photos of Thailand already, somehow I still find myself wearing shades of green far more often than I ever do in Australia. I guess my love of matchy-matchy even extends to which biome I’m living in!

So do you think my look passes for a 1930’s inspired ensemble or should I stick to the 1940’s and 1950’s? I’ve been eyeing off a lot of 30s fashions a lot lately, and I’ve even bought a stack of 1930’s vintage patterns as well as some of the Simplicity re-releases. As much as I love it, I really couldn’t afford to buy true 30’s vintage, {not that it would ever fit me}, and I’d be terrified of ruining it.

Plus, I’m not sure I could ever get my hair to behave for finger waves. I’m hard pressed to get a decent pin curl set out of it, so in these pictures I just rolled it under for a faux bob. I feel like if I worked a bit more on it, my faux bob could look okay, so I’m seriously thinking of dabbling a bit more in 1930’s styles, hence buying the sewing patterns.

It’s an era of fashion that is calling to me, but I’m a bit unsure if I can actually pull off 1930s properly… There’s no harm in trying I suppose? Or is my style just not accurate enough to make it work? Would you have any tips for a first-timer? …Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough.

Two things you need when blogging in the tropics ~ mozzie spray and a water bottle!

Oh gosh, I got eaten alive taking these pictures, and it’s a bit silly because I have had this happen before when doing a blog shoot, but it was so long ago that I completely forgot about the necessity of mosquito repellent! D’oh!

Also, I’m super glad I took a chance on doing this shoot. It’s the first time I’ve taken photos by myself since getting my 50mm lens for my birthday last year.

Because the depth of field is so shallow, it’s really easy to get the focus wrong and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get the camera to focus correctly and stay focused while running into place before the self-timer goes off!

I have been severely psyching myself out for the last month. I was so certain I needed the Mister to take the pictures for me, and that I couldn’t do it myself.  Of course, with the whole family being so busy that means I have to wait for weeks and weeks and weeks because every time I think we might be able to shoot *this* weekend, something comes up without fail! Or the children are crazy, or need naps, or I need a nap, etc…. It’s really difficult to line everyone up.

It rarely happens and it’s so much easier if I can just sneak off when I have the time to take the pics myself. But I wasn’t doing that because I was afraid of my new lens…. Haha!

I discovered the trick was to focus the camera on an object that was where I’d be standing, so either a leaf on the ground, the chair, or the tree trunk in this case. I’d push the button to start the self timer, then swing the camera to frame the shot. It worked surprisingly well! Though I had to run pretty quickly to get into frame, as well as a lot further! The camera had to be so far away to offset the shallow depth of field, so I ending up with a bunch of photos that are just of my back. Haha!

There where definitely batches of pics that didn’t work out and I needed to retake them, but for the most part I am fairly happy with the results. Next time I’ll make more effort to go find a better photo shoot location.

This time I just went to some of the gardens in our Moo Baan because I figured if none of the photos worked out I wouldn’t have wasted too much time driving all around. It’s not the greatest backdrop, although I do really love these giant trees. It’s very hard to show how cool they are because they are soooo big!

I am wearing a vintage dress that I picked up in Thailand last year at a street market. I’m fairly certain it’s a 90s-does-50s dress, the shirtwaist cut is very interesting with strong Asian styling. The waist is quite boxy, the dress naturally just hangs off the bust without any shaping. It did have one of those little slide adjusters at the back of the bodice ~ you know the kind you often find on 90s vests?

I took off the slide part and knotted the two halves together to pull the waist in. It’s a really comfortable dress to wear like that, but for the pictures I wanted it to look a little more vintage and styled up so I threw on a belt as well.

It still turned out as quite a casual look, so I added my trusty Anello backpack and Miss L Fire wedges for a slightly peppy-come-collegiate-come-summer-boardwalk style. Once I added my trusty Peppy Chapette red-breasted Robin to pick out the red of the plaid, it was all good!

I am all for a casual sundress and brooch with sandals these days. It’s my go-too look as I find anything else adds too much fuss and bother for such hot weather.

I like all the accessories and details that vintage ensembles have, but I really don’t think that it’s super practical for tropical environments. Certainly, it’s really hard to get my hair to behave neatly, it’s just wild and does what it wants these days!

I’m happy for it to be super curly, but I do feel like it detracts from the overall vintage vibes of my ensembles… *sigh* Well, you can’t have everything!

We are almost one month into autumn and the leaves are falling fast. Everywhere I look there are goldenrod carpets of crunchy, crisp foliage scattered beneath shaggy, half-naked trees.

Autumn is my favourite season ~ the late roses come into bloom, and brisk breezes cool the morning and evening skies. Fall days slip by, as glided beads sliding off string, and so time turns ever on.

In Australia, autumn weather is usually quite mild, and I’m lucky enough to still be enjoying my summer dresses, and my summer hats, including this new-to-me, vintage daisy yellow boater.

I had placed a bid for it on eBay, and then I spied this super cute, yellow enamel hat novelty brooch and knew I had to get that as well ~ all the matching pieces!  (^ε ^) ♡

Yellow isn’t a colour that features very heavily in my wardrobe. This dress is my one and only “yellow” dress that looks a lot more like cream with a hint of butter, but I like the effect of the yellow and caramel accessories with it ~ I think this combination works well.

All that being said, after wearing this yellow straw boater I have realized that I don’t actually know whether it will work with the rest of my wardrobe! I did have a certain look in mind when I bought the hat, but I’m not sure that I considered the “wider” wardrobe picture when purchasing it.  This is kind of a problem, as I don’t really want to keep a hat that I can only wear with one dress.

I don’t actually know what I might do with it.  I could keep it, but I’m not really wanting to waste the space on a ‘one look’ hat. I really only have the wardrobe space, and the time, for versatile items. I have a few vintage pieces like this ~ ones that don’t quite fit right, or that I’m not really keen on anymore. I think I might sell them, but I’m not sure where or how. eBay? Etsy? Instagram?? {Actually, I don’t have enough followers to sell through Instagram} Or maybe I could do a giveaway???

All these questions I’m pondering, and I’m curious ~ have you ever bought vintage only to realize you don’t know if you’ll get enough wear out of it?  Have you ever bought vintage online that you discovered you didn’t like after it arrived?  What would you do with vintage you didn’t want?

I have never seen the sun sparkle quite like it did this afternoon. I took Theodore to the park behind our house. {We call it the train park; partly because it is behind the railway station behind our house, and also because it has a train theme. It’s very cute and it’s Theodore’s favorite park.} There I was fortunate to discover the most stunning light filtering through the half-naked tree branches as the sun lazily crawled to bed.

It’s just wonderful when nature’s elements come together to paint a glorious picture without you even realizing that it is going to happen! The burnished sun beams, the honeyed autumn leaves, the little grassy knoll…

I have wanted to snap pictures at this locality for a while. But as there is a lot of ugly around the pretty, and usually quite hopeless lighting, so it really was a trick to pull these snaps off. The challenge is half the fun; though I am glad these worked, or I probably never would have gotten shots from this particular spot.

I have realized this is just one part of why I love blogging so much. I do adore the chance to take pretty photos, and practice my photography skills.  One day I’d like to do some photography with models and see if I can’t have even more fun with greater ability to control the angles and style of shooting. I couldn’t live without my tripod, but it does have it’s own limitations.

Do you prefer to take the photos or put together the outfits when you blog? I’ve probably got one foot in each camp, but most of me is on the photography side. It’s just a wee bit more fun for me to work with my camera and produce the vision I see in my mind’s eye.

I must apologize for my extended absence ~ we have quite suddenly had the opportunity to put our house up for sale which means that the last week or so has been a flurry of packing, sorting items to be sold, and general mayhem that comes from such a large upheaval.  (= ̄^  ̄=);

We have yet to list the property on the market; this chaos is actually just pre-move, pre-sale preparations, so I am expecting the schedule muddles to continue for some time I’m afraid. Fear not, the outfit shoots are still happening ~ it’s just a matter of finding the time to sit down, edit said photos, and post them.

I always am surprised at how long this actually takes. It seems like such a simple task to post a blog update, but by the time I’m done, anywhere from an hour to three have slipped by in the blink of an eye!

As such, I will do my level best to post a little more often than sporadically, but we will have to see how this goes. I’m always hanging around on Instagram {missbjvear} if you wish to touch base ~ I’d love to hear from you.  ・° ♡。゚.*\ (´ ˘ `♡) / ゚ ♡ ° ・

~ Off On An Adventure ~

A blouse and a boater hat make a lovely combination | Lavender & Twill Take a girl and put her in a forest | Lavender & Twill

It's a great day for adventures | Lavender & Twill

And a handy satchel for important things like a compass and lipgloss | Lavender & Twill
Glitter sandals add the perfect sparkle | Lavender & Twill

This kind of look never fails to make me feel like I’m ready to jaunt off on an adventure ~ straw boater hat? Check! That will keep off the sun.

Handy satchel purse? Check ~ that will leave my hands free for photography and shopping. Comfortable, yet stylish traveling attire? Check ~ I wouldn’t want to LOOK like a tourist after all!

Lastly, sturdy, comfortable and cute footwear? Check! I have just the pair of shoes ~ jelly wedges. Naturally with added glitter of course!  (✿◠‿◠)ノ*:・゚✧゚・:*✩ *:・゚

Sadly, I’m not actually off on any adventures of the traveling variety any time soon, but I do love to wear this style of outfit when I’m going to the park with the family, or even grocery shopping {minus the hat}.

It is useful to be able to boil down your more ‘extravagant’ looks into some thing simpler.  Exhibit A: an outfit you would wear on a date, or out to town, or to a more formal event ~  in my case, this might involve a dress, nylons, high-heels, some sort of pin curl set or up-do, jewelry, a coat and gloves, or a hat, and possibly a crinoline.

By selecting certain elements out of your favorite outfits and substituting them, you can reduce the glamour and elevate the comfort. For instance, a skirt instead of a dress, cute flats instead of heels, a hat & hair bow instead of a fancy hair-do, and voilà! You condense your elegant style into a casual, day-to-day outfit.  This way, you can still feel that you look ‘like you’ but on a day-to-day level that is easier to wear when you are more active ~ like chasing around after babies say…   …….(((「・ヮ・)「 *glomp*

Run Isabelle! Run! | Lavender & Twill Where extra jewelry and high heels are definitely a disadvantage!

Of course, you can reverse this trend as well, taking your favorite elements from a casual look and glaming it up, but as this often involves switching out jeans and a cardigan for slacks and a blazer, I think this is a more modern look and I tend to steer clear of such trendy styles.    °(^ᴥ^)°

All that’s left to cover is your input now! So what’s your favorite go-to look for traveling and otherwise active activities?

I have been out and about ~ dashing hither and thither on family getaway weekends, and as a result, my schedule is all out of wack! So I’ll kick up my heels with a little down time and enjoy the crisp autumn air.

Indeed, I’m fairly certain fall is my favorite season of all, though you will have to excuse me if I change my mind later. I think it’s simply that the change is nice ~ I find the change in weather, style and colors quite refreshing.

Oh, and aren’t these oak leaf paper graffiti prints fab?  ლ(╹◡╹ლ)  I am so intrigued by public art when it is executed well. Spotting the wonderful pieces of local artists is quite fun. There is a bit of a movement around my city to have artists come and deliberately paint works on things like electrical boxes, and I think it’s marvelous to add a bit of interest to what often is a boring, utilitarian space, or box, as the case may be!

Though I’m fairly certain these pictures weren’t commissioned, I can’t help liking them anyway… I’m such a rebel right?   (≧ ∀ ≦ )
